Wind Turbine Service Technology - Career Studies Certificate
The wind energy industry is experiencing a very high growth rate and has the potential for immediate application as a viable component of our country's strategic energy plan. Most states are already actively involved in this industry, and related projects and proposals are now in the development stages in Virginia.
The Basic Wind Turbine Service Technician Career Studies Certificate requires the completion of 29 credits that provides students with the basic knowledge and skills needed to enter employment as a technician. Those who complete the program will have an overview of the principles of wind energy, an understanding of the equipment used in turbines and a set of skills that will allow them to seek entry-level employment in the field and serve as a foundation for the development of more advanced skills.
The Wind Turbine Service Technology Certificate program prepares individuals for career entry and advancement opportunities in the advanced technology applications of manufacturing and wind energy technologies. The program is designed to prepare students to become Wind Turbine Service Technicians to support the system installation, operation and maintenance needs of the wind energy industry.
Under minimal supervision, graduates of the Wind Energy Turbine Technician Certificate Training Program will be able to:
- Install, test, service and repair utility-scale and small wind turbine systems and components
- Troubleshoot and maintain automated control and PLC systems
- Troubleshoot and maintain Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems
- Perform all job functions in a safe manner in compliance with applicable safety standards
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for climbing and safe wind turbine climbing skills
This program is based on national standards and focuses on the development of industry-defined competencies and skills in: electricity, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, computers and networking, mechanical systems and mechanisms, mechatronics, PLCs, electrical power generation and distribution, wind power systems, teamwork, quality safety.
DSLCC will work with its partners to respond to industry-wide challenges and opportunities related to meeting the growing demand for skilled technicians who can install, maintain and service modern utility-scale and small wind turbines.

Students must meet the general admission requirements to the College.
Persons applying for entrance into this program will be assessed for mechanical aptitude, ability to climb and work at heights in excess of 100 feet, ability to work in enclosed spaces and lift 50 pounds. Failure to meet these standards may disqualify the applicant from the program.
In addition, students need to be aware that pursuing this certificate means you understand that many employers have specific job requirements. Wind Turbine Technicians work with large, complex computer-controlled electromechanical systems. Although some technicians may work in manufacturing facilities, most Wind Turbine Service Technicians will work in the field and may be expected to carry out their duties at both on-shore and off-shore sites, in confined spaces in elevated locations, and sometimes under extreme environmental conditions.
Some of the climates and locations may be harsh and physically demanding. Many employers have specific climbing, lifting, or other physical activity requirements as terms of employment. The use of heavy equipment may be involved. In addition to expected knowledge, specific skill sets and physical requirements, employers may also have applicants provide evidence of a clean driving record, no criminal history and/or no use of illegal substances.
Since Utility-Scale wind operations are feasible only in specific geographic locations, the Wind Turbine Service Technician must be willing to travel extensively and/or relocate to take full advantage of career opportunities in the industry.
